Kazakhstan upset Argentina 3-1 in the Davis Cup Play-Off match in Astana. Mikhail Kukushkin beat US Open quarter finalist Diego Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 7-6 (7-2) after 2 hours and 44 minutes battle on court, at the National Tennis Centre in Astana to earn Kazakhstan a spot in the 2018 Davis Cup World Group.
Schwartzman, ranked 28 in the world is placed 50 spots above Kukushkin, lost first two service games in each of the first two sets and struggled to recover from there on.
With this loss, Argentina dropped out of the World Group just ten months after winning the Davis Cup title. Kazakhstan has made the return in the World Group after being relegated in 2016. The Kazakhs have been defeated just once in their last nine Davis Cup home matches since 2010. Argentina will be relegated to Group I of the Americas Zone in 2018.
Argentina is the first reigning Davis Cup champion to be relegated since Sweden in 1999. It was last outside the top-tier World Group in 2001, while Kazakhstan returns following relegation last year.
In other Davis Cup Ties, Canada beat India 3 – 2; Denis Shapovalov, Canada’s ace 18 year old rising star made the most of the opportunity. The 18-year-old put Canada through to the World Group for 2018 after a dominating 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-3 victory over Ramkumar Ramanathan of India in its best-of-five Davis Cup tie on Sunday on the indoor hard court at Northlands Coliseum.
In Group II Asia Oceania 3rd Round Tie, Pakistan beat Thailand in a tough encounter by a scoreline of 3 -2. In the final rubber, seasoned Aqeel Khan prevailed over Kittiphong Wachiramanowong in 5 sets, 6 4, 6 3, 3 6, 2 6, 6 2, to secure the tie for his country.
