Unseeded Jiarui Sun & Yuxuan Li Triumph at Asian 14&U Grade A Tournament in Kunming, China

The Asian 14&U Grade A Tournament (East Asia) threw surprise winners with China’s unseeded Yuxuan Li and Jiarui Sun clinching the boys’ and girls’ singles titles respectively following their wins over higher-ranked Indian rivals on 21 June, Friday.

In the boys’ singles title clash, Li shocked fourth seed Yashwin Dahiya 6-1 , 6-2. Li’s aggressive style of play and precise shots did not let Dahiya counter-attack for a comeback.

The girls’ singles final was also a lop-sided affair with Sun stunning top-seed Karthika Padmakumar 6-2 6-2. Sun had impressed throughout the tournament and it culminated in her clinching the title.
All four finalists booked their slots in the upcoming Asian Junior Championship, to be held in Cambodia later this year.

The event, held in Kunming from 17- 21 June, showcased the best young tennis talents from across Asia and first ATF team for the Kunming event which featured Ian Liu (Chinese Taipei) and Yitian Lou (China) in boys category and in girls Lara Rauti (Hong Kong, China) and Mi Na Lee (Korea), leading to some unforgettable matches and stunning upsets.
The boys’ doubles final was a nail-biting affair. The Indian pair, Vivaan Bidsaria and Yashwin Dahiya clashed against the Chinese duo of Yuxuan Li and Minhui Zhang. In a match that swung back and forth, Bidsaria and Dahiya emerged victorious 7-6(7), 1-6, 10-7.

In the girls’ doubles, Jiarui Sun continued her winning streak, partnering with Zihan Feng to secure another title. The duo outplayed Nie Mengtong of Canada and Yi Qige of China 6-3, 6-4.

The tournament was marked by early upsets, with unseeded players like Sun and Li making significant waves by knocking out seeded players in the early stages. Their unexpected journeys to the finals added an element of unpredictability and excitement to the competition.

Congratulations to all the champions and participants for their outstanding performances.
