A Legacy of Firsts: Ichiya Kumagae Blazes the Trail
Tennis was initially included in the Olympic Games program in 1896 but was absent from 1924 until 1988. However, a pivotal moment for Asian tennis occurred in 1920. Japanese player Ichiya Kumagae etched his name in history by becoming the first Japanese & Asian to win an Olympic medal in tennis.

The reintroduction of tennis as a full medal sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics marked the beginning of a new era for tennis. Leander Paes of India earned a podium place in 1996, bagging a bronze medal in Atlanta. This feat made him the first Indian player to win an individual Olympic medal in tennis, further solidifying Asia’s presence on the global tennis map.

The 2004 Athens Olympics witnessed another historic moment when the Chinese duo of Li Ting and Sun Tiantian clinched gold in the women’s doubles event. Their victory marked the first Asian gold medal in tennis at the Olympics, further cementing the continent’s growing dominance in the sport.

China continued its medal winning streak at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with Yan Zi and Zheng Jie securing the bronze medal in women’s doubles.

More recently, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kei Nishikori of Japan displayed his exceptional skills by defeating tennis legend Rafael Nadal to win the bronze medal. This victory solidified Nishikori’s place in tennis history, making him the first Japanese man to win an Olympic tennis medal since Ichiya Kumagae in 1920.

Notably, the 2024 Olympics will mark Nishikori’s fifth appearance at the Games, showcasing his remarkable dedication and longevity. Meanwhile Indian legend Leander Paes holds the record for the most appearances at the Olympics having competed in a staggering seven consecutive Olympic Games between 1992 Barcelona and 2016 Rio Games.

With a talented & pool of Asian players Elena Rybakina (KAZ) Qinwen Zheng (CHN), Su Wei Hsieh (TPE), Rohan Bopanna (IND), Alexnader Bublik (KAZ) and Zhizhen Zhang (CHN) are ready to take on the world’s best, it will be fascinating to witness the strategies and skills displayed by Asia’s rising stars as they strive to etch their names in Olympic tennis history.
