History beckons Cambodia As It Gears Up To Host First Ever Davis Cup in Phnom Penh

In a historic milestone for Cambodian tennis, the country will host its first ever Davis Cup when the Asia/Oceania Group IV matches are held in Phnom Penh from July 10-13.

Cambodia will get its name etched in the tournament’s rich history when eight nations will battle it out for regional glory on the hard courts of the Morodok Techo National Stadium.

Cambodia, alongside Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Myanmar,
Sri Lanka, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, will be divided into two pools of four teams each.
The top team from each pool will advance to promotion play-off, where victory will secure their spot in the World Group III for year 2025.

Teams finishing third in their pools will face relegation play-offs, with the bottom two nations dropping down to a lower division.

Cambodia narrowly missed out on promotion to the World Group III in 2023, falling 0-3 to Saudi Arabia in the relegation playoff.

Seven other nations will be vying for progress along with the hosts Cambodia, ranked 102 with a 25-23 win/loss record,.

Iraq, ranked 113th, with a 37-64 match record, narrowly avoided relegation in Group IV last year by defeating Guam.
Similarly, Kuwait (world rank 107, 68-48 record) fell short of promotion to Group III in 2023 after a 0-2 defeat against Syria. Kyrgyzstan (world rank 97, 22-45 record) also faced disappointment, missing promotion to Group III after a loss to Singapore.

Meanwhile, Myanmar (world rank 128, 30-37 record) will be looking to build on their success in 2023. A hard-fought 2-1 victory over Laos secured their promotion to Group IV, offering them a chance to climb even higher this year.
Qatar (world rank 124, 58-73 record) enjoyed similar success, defeating Mongolia 3-0 in a Group V promotional playoff.

Sri Lanka (world rank 103, 70-79 record) unfortunately found themselves relegated to Group IV after a close 1-2 defeat against Malaysia in the Group III playoff in 2023.

Finally, the United Arab Emirates (world rank 111, 69-76 record) will be aiming to avoid a repeat of their relegation battle in 2023, where they narrowly defeated Turkmenistan 2-1.

Best of luck to all participating nations in their quest for success on the tennis court.
